A recent study shows that if you want kids with thick waistlines and weak muscles, by all means, keep indulging their screen addiction.
Not that this is the first time screens have been shown to be unhealthy. Far from it. Past research links excessive screen time to obesity, poor creativity, mental health problems, poor physical activity skills, poor health in general and many other problems.
According to this research, published in BioMed Central’s open access journal International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, kids who watch the most TV perform worse on tests requiring muscle strength (such as a long-jump, running, etc) and have significantly larger waistlines.
The physical activity issue sucks, but the larger waistline issue is extremely bad news. A bigger waist size is a major red flag for overweight kids. Large waists are associated with visceral fat, which is the type of fat hiding around organs and it can cause massive health problems.
