Last Minute Eco-friendly Mother’s Day Gifts

by Jennifer Chait on May 4, 2010

I don’t make too big a fuss about Mother’s Day. My mom and I weren’t close (understatement) and Mother’s Day hasn’t ever been a fun holiday for me (also understatement). After my son Cedar was born and as he’s grown I’ve tried to warm up to the idea because he does like this holiday and for his sake I try to be cheerful about it. Still, I’m not cheerful enough about it to post lots of tips about it (sorry) but I can offer some gift suggestions and point you in the direction of some wonderful green ideas for those of you who like Mother’s Day.

Great green ideas for Mother’s Day:

Green gift ideas for an eco-friendly Mother’s Day:

Before going shopping, you can try some homemade green gift ideas and make a nice recycled card or even just do something simple like make a nice organic homemade breakfast for your mom or go on a nature walk. Oh, and pictures of the kids always go over well as a gift – pick up some nice thrift store frames to keep it green.

Store-bought, last minute green gift ideas for Mother’s Day:

Right now time is running out, (Mother’s Day is the 9th) so if you’re going to order something online make sure it’ll get here in time. Basically you’re looking at shops that offer overnight. Below are some ideas – all of these gifts should arrive on time so long as you order asap and choose overnight delivery.

Of course organic flowers are almost always a sure thing. I myself love, but rarely get flowers; SO I picked some eco-friendly flowers out that I would personally like from Organic Bouquet . Hopefully these will appeal to your mom too…

  • Deluxe Hyacinth Bouquet – a great flower gift that will fill your mom’s home with that wonderful Hyacinth fragrance.
  • Blushing Rose Bouquet – soooooo pretty in pink, peach and cream. I actually like mixed bouquets better usually, but these colors are amazing.
  • Treat mom like a queen with flowers of purple – this Purple Embrace bouquet has 30 lovely blooms of Lavender Roses, Lavender Mardi Gras Aster, Purple Trachelium and Purple Dianthus.

Of course moms like cookies too. Well, I do anyhow and I’m guessing other mamas do as well. Beautiful Sweets makes amazing USDA Organic cookies for all occasions, including Mother’s Day and their Love You Mom Cookies will make an excellent tasty gift.

Organic Silky Soy Moisture Bar from Evergreen Candleworks – Right up front let me tell you that I have no clue if this gift will make it in time for Mother’s Day (Evergreen doesn’t seem to have great shipping info) BUT I LOVE these (read my review). They’re amazing and I swear your mom will adore getting this long lasting gift; even if it arrives late. Plus, Evergreen Candleworks is offering free shipping until Mother’s Day on all orders over $70.

For glamor-minded mamas, Tarte is a nice place to shop. They offer many vegan-friendly gift options and as a company have many green perks. I’m a huge fan of their Rise & Shine natural lip stain and their natural cheek stain. Another nice body care gift idea is the I Love My Mama gift set from Earth Mama Angel Baby – which is an excellent gift set for any mama (read my review).

Lastly, as a more practical idea you might want to consider an excellent book about green living – that’s a gift that keeps giving all year long. Two of the best green books I’ve reviewed recently are Green Guide Families: The Complete Reference for Eco-Friendly Parents and Whole Green Catalog: 1000 Best Things for You and the Earth, and either would make a great gift. Although if you know a mama who is expecting a baby this year then I’d suggest Eco-nomical Baby Guide.
