Play kitchens have many benefits, such as…
- Encouraging educational opportunities related to food and cooking.
- Teaching teamwork. Play kitchens are fun even for solo kids, but get more kids involved and your little one will learn cooperation and how to work with others.
- Inspiring pretend free-play.
- Freeing up parents – you shouldn’t always have to entertain your child and play kitchens result in endless hours of play.
- Teaching colors, counting, shapes, patterns and so much more.
- Encouraging responsibility. Play kitchens promote cooking yes, but also organization and clean-up skills.
- And much, much more.
You’d be hard pressed to find a better gift for your child or even a group of siblings. Plus, although a super cool eco-play kitchen may seem out of reach, that’s simply not true anymore. You can find a safe, green play kitchen within your budget because nowadays there are so many choices out there.

May as well kick this off with the bling of all play kitchen sets by Camden Rose. Both the Simple Hearth and Fridge (sold separately) are more costly than other green play kitchens, but it’s because Camden Rose makes high quality, heirloom toys with actual functionality. The company makes their toys with solid materials such as real cherry hardwood with walnut and birch accents, heavy gauge stainless steel and everything is finished with natural beeswax wood polish.
The play hearth has knobs that move, plenty of play and storage space and even a realistic 12″ pull-out cutting board. The fridge features both fridge and freezer space with a shelf on the door and lots of storage. These two pieces together create an expansive play kitchen experience for your child, but it’s on the pricey side. Luckily, there are plenty of other play kitchens to choose from below.
The Camden Rose designed Country Kitchen is a little more affordable than the sets above, thanks to being made with solid unfinished pine. While less expensive, it’s still eco-friendly and packed with fun features, such as oven rack, side cubby that can be used at a fridge or a storage space, a towel rack on one side and wooden pegs on the other for hanging storage and a pull out drawer at the bottom. Plus this kitchen has a curvy appealing look and takes up less space in your home!
One of my favorite play kitchen sets of the season is this cute PlanToys stove and sink with fridge combo. Both sets are sold separately, but even together will only set you back about $110.00, which is an amazing bargain for a younger child’s eco-friendly kitchen set.
The beautifully designed crafted kitchen set includes a stove with turning knobs, oven, a frying pan, a pot and a spatula. The sink and fridge features a realistic-looking sink and tap, food preparation, and refrigerator. The set has a portable design, and can be used on a table, shelf and even the floor. Made with eco-friendly PlanWood.

Janod uses child-safe materials such as real cherry wood, beech wood and matte water based paints for their toys. A downside is most require assembly, but any parent can manage a task like this with instructions. Janod play kitchens are functional and fun, not to mention very colorful.
I like the spicy cooker playset shown above, which includes fun accessories as well, such as a metal spatula, a frying pan, colander, pot holder and three boxes of food. I also like the Janod Macaron Maxi Cooker Playset shown below, which also comes with accessories.
Janod has many play kitchen sets in their collection though, so you can pick and choose the one that best fits your child.
The Neo Kitchen has modern appeal and features a realistic-looking sink with faucet, a sideboard, two different size of stoves and an oven with turning knob.
Maybe it’s the 70s kid in me, but I love this olive green kitchen. It’s so cute and retro! Made by Whitney Brothers, this sweet play kitchen set is made with durable birch and laminate in safe, non-toxic natural UV finish. Top-to-bottom continuous hinges prevent little fingers from getting pinched. The set is GreenGuard™ Gold Certified, made in the USA and comes with a lifetime Warranty.
Most Whitney Brothers’ products are built in birch plywood or warm solid maple from responsibly managed and sustained forests.
Whitney Brothers offers many other cool play kitchens in their kids collection, including the two below.
Many of Hape’s toys are made with bamboo and all are made with child-safe, non-toxic finishes. Hape does use some plywood in their toys, but has improved some of their other eco-features. For example, during production, Hape has reworked their surface treatments, energy consumption, and packaging options to minimize environmental impact and maximize efficiency. This city kitchen set features a two burner stove, oven, sink, and storage shelves, plus includes 10 accessory items to cook and serve food with.
This Hape kitchen is made with solid wood construction features a combination of painted and natural wood surfaces. The set is a great deal too as it includes the kitchen, cooking sets, wooden toy food, and more. Assembly is simple and all tools and hardware parents need are included.
ECR4Kids specializes in classroom furniture and toys, which means, their stuff is made to stand up to whatever your kid can dish out, or up, as is the case with one of their cool pretend kitchen sets. This all-in-one kitchen includes a pretend refrigerator, sink, stove and cupboard for toy food storage. It’s made with a stain-resistant maple finish laminate is easy to clean plus features full piano hinges and rounded edges for safety. The set, like most of their toys is phthalate-free and GREENGUARD Certified.
From what I’ve seen from PlanToys lately, my guess is that they’re making the move from using rubberwood to build their toys to PlanWood, their recycled rubberwood material. I say this, because most of their rubberwood toys seem to be going away, including their amazing play kitchen sets. I’m guessing that they’ll be debuting more PlanWood play kitchens in time. For now, this great rubberwood kitchen center made with non-toxic finishes is still available though.
The all in one kitchen center features a double sided design, perfect for more than one child, turning knobs, an oven, storage area, sink, dishwashing unit, and cooking utensils holder.
I love this sweet little play kitchen and the contemporary modular design is perfect for small spaces or traveling kiddos! The Table Top Kitchen features a counter-top walnut sink bowl, a faucet that swivels, two stove-top burners and knobs that turn. Made by Camden Rose so it’s designed safely to last for generations. Choose from cherry or maple wood.
This cool company makes wonderful heirloom quality toys of all sorts but their play kitchens are over the top amazing. They offer all of their kitchens in your choice of light or dark hardwood. The kitchen shown above is Sylvie’s Kitchen Deluxe, which has a higher cook top (24″) to accommodates taller children, and also gives some space for your growing child. It comes packed with play space, all knobs turn and it includes a removable metal sink bowl. Comes in hardwood or pine finished with natural Danish oil finish and Baltic birch Carb2 compliant plywood back.
Elves & Angels has over a dozen lovely kitchen set choices to choose from.
This kitchen has two unfortunate features which include zero oven and while it’s made with pinewood, there’s some low emission engineered wood thrown in (plywood). However, it’s a cute starter kitchen that does feature many playtime perks such as a stainless steel faucet and sink, storage cabinets and fun hooks to hang cooking tools on.
If you combine this kitchen with the Felt Gourmet Plush Cooking Set shown below, you’d have a full, inexpensive play kitchen setup for your child.
Short on space, or just want to see if your child is interested in play kitchen play? This charming table-top kitchen is inexpensive, fun and offers a taste of kitchen play until you’re ready to invest in a larger play kitchen.
Handmade in Nepal with 100% New Zealand wool felt with polyfill, this eight-piece set includes the cute little stovetop, spoon, whisk, pot with lid, pan with no lid, ladle and felt ball trivet. The set can be easily spot-cleaned and is perfect for traveling too.
